10 Oct 2008

Well, summer is officially over. We are a week away from opening of coon season and soon the snow will be flying and coyote hunting will start. The director’s meeting was held on August 23, 2008. Game Fair was discussed and all went well. The winner was from Elk River and I will get their name updated in the blog soon. The dog tent was not as successful as years past so we are planning on getting our own booth again. The puppy hunts went well this summer I heard, though I didn’t get to the last couple. Mark says the trap shoot was successful and hopefully we will be able to continue these in the future. We are still working on trying to increase membership and looking for directors in a couple of districts. If you have any ideas, please share them, as it takes everyone to make the club successful. The planning is on for the annual meeting. We are working on making it a banquet this year. The date is set for April 22, 2009 at Roadside Tavern, Roscoe, MN. We will be having a raffle, we are looking at ideas for guns and hunting packages of some sort. If you have anything you can donate for silent auction, please contact an officer or director. The more we can get donated, the better we can help our club.

You will find the results of the Puppy hunts and trap shoot are posted on the results page.

Well, I keep asking for people to share a story and I guess I have one I have to share that happened recently. We have a four year old English who is an awesome dog on coon. We went out the other night training. We cut the dogs loose, BS’d for a while, and when the dog started treeing we decided it was time to see what we had. As we are walking along the river bottom, Chris B in front, me following and Mr. Chris bringing up the rear. Mr. Chris shines the tree and spots the coon, along with what we thought was a blinking red light of a passing plane(we all know how those lights fool us at night), it took about two seconds to realize the blinking light was the tracking collar on the dog. Yes, Billy gave new meaning to “Treeing a Coon”. There sat our dog about 30-40 feet in the tree, out on the far branches barely balancing while barking at the coon. The unfortunate part was, we were unable to climb the tree and get where we need to to get him down. All we could do was wait. After about five minutes of trying to think of any way to catch an 80 pound dog, he started slipping and started falling. Mr. Chris managed to break his fall slightly, and they both ended up on the ground. We had a vet check him out, and the good news is after a couple of days, he is starting to look better.(Mr. Chris is ok too.) A few days of being sore and hopefully the dog will make a full recovery and be ready to hunt again. I think next time, we go to the flattest spot with no tree….lol

Well, that’s all for now. Keep hunting those hounds.

Summer Hunt Update

June Puppy Hunt-a good time had by all. The dog show went well and the kids learned a lot. We managed not to hurt anyone with our Horse Shoe in the Dark Tournament-the lights of those coon hunters come in handy. Puppy Hunt and Youth Hunt went well, and of course as always the kids(as well as adults) enjoyed good food and the prizes. It turned out to be a nice morning for the Coon Drag and Barking Contest Also. Check out winners on Hunt Results Page.

July Puppy Hunt-I didn’t make this one as I was camping. I heard it went well other than the rain during the trap shoot. We have the series totals on the Hunt Result page.

August Upcoming-Game Fair around the corner-contact Deb Nistler if you can work. Dates are August 8,9,10 and 15,16,17. The next Puppy Hunt is August 16 at Jr’s Mad Dog Kennels. Also, they are planning a MTHA State Champ Trap Shoot. See information below.
